What Is It That I Need Right Now?

A wise lady once suggested something to me.

She said that when things feel challenging — when life feels a little too loud, a little too heavy, or simply too much — I should pause and ask myself:

“What is it that I need right now?”

It’s such a simple question.

And yet, every time I ask it, the answer is different.

A Question That Changes With You

Sometimes, the answer is connection.

To be with my people.
To sit, to talk, to laugh, or just to be in the same space as someone who feels safe.

Sometimes, it’s movement.

To step outside, walk the dog, feel the air, notice the sky, and let nature gently bring everything back into perspective.

Sometimes, it’s rest.

A long, hot bath.
A quiet room.
A moment where nothing is being asked of me.

And sometimes, it’s something even simpler.

A good book.
A cup of tea.
A few minutes of stillness before the next thing begins.

We Don’t Always Ask Ourselves

The thing is, we don’t often stop to ask.

We move from one thing to the next.
We respond to what’s needed around us.
We focus on what everyone else might need.

And somewhere in all of that, we forget to check in with ourselves.

Not in a big, dramatic way.

Just quietly.

Gently.

Listening Without Judgement

What I’ve come to realise is that this question isn’t about getting the “right” answer.

It’s not about being productive.
It’s not about choosing the most useful option.

It’s about listening.

And sometimes, what we need isn’t what we expect.

It might be to cancel the plan.
To go to bed early.
To say no.
To step back.

Or, just as easily, it might be to say yes.

To reach out.
To move.
To do the thing you’ve been putting off because something inside you is ready.

The Body Often Knows First

Before the mind catches up, the body usually already knows.

You might feel it as tightness.
Or heaviness.
Or a sense of restlessness that you can’t quite place.

And when you ask the question — what is it that I need right now? — you give your body the space to answer.

Not in words, necessarily.

But in feeling.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Big

The answer doesn’t have to be life-changing.

In fact, most of the time, it isn’t.

It’s small.

A glass of water.
A deeper breath.
A step outside.
A moment of quiet.

But those small things matter.

They’re often exactly what brings you back to yourself.

A Gentle Practice

You don’t need to wait for things to feel overwhelming to ask this question.

You can ask it at any point in your day.

In the morning, before everything begins.
In the middle of a busy afternoon.
In the quiet moments before bed.

What is it that I need right now?

And then — just as importantly — allow yourself to honour the answer, even in the smallest way.

A Softer Way Forward

There’s something deeply kind about living this way.

Less pushing.
Less overriding.
Less ignoring what your body is trying to tell you.

And more listening.

More responding.

More meeting yourself where you are.

A Gentle Reminder

If today feels full, or heavy, or simply a little off, you don’t need to have all the answers.

Just start here.

What is it that I need right now?

Pause. Breathe. Restore.

And if what you need is space — space to rest, to soften, to be looked after for a while — you’re always welcome at Sanare 🤍
