Word of the Week — Somatic
The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the body.”
In the wellness and therapeutic world, somatic practices are approaches that focus on the connection between the mind, emotions and physical body. Rather than only talking or thinking about stress, somatic work encourages us to notice how stress, emotions and experiences actually feel within the body.
Have you ever noticed your jaw tightening when you feel overwhelmed? Or your shoulders creeping upwards during stressful periods? Perhaps your breathing becomes shallow when you’re anxious, or exhaustion settles heavily into your muscles after long periods of emotional strain.
The body is constantly communicating with us.
Somatic approaches gently encourage us to slow down enough to listen.
Massage, Reiki, breathwork, stretching, yoga, grounding practices and even moments of stillness can all support somatic healing by helping the nervous system feel safer, calmer and more regulated.
At Sanare, this gentle reconnection with the body sits quietly at the heart of many treatments. Sometimes healing begins not with “fixing,” but with finally giving the body permission to exhale.
